14 Farms in Cheongnim-dong, Pohang City Selected as Preliminary Export Complex for 'Summer Radish'

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Pohang City announced on the 10th that Cheongnim-dong area in Donghae-myeon has been selected as the first 'summer radish' fresh agricultural product preliminary export complex in Gyeongbuk through the '2021 Agricultural Food Export Sector Public Contest'.

The cultivation area of 14 farms growing Pohang's 'summer radish' selected in this contest reaches 10 hectares. These farms, which exported 203 tons of summer radish to the United States, Hong Kong, Canada, and Malaysia, applied for the preliminary export complex designation in August and recently received the final selection notification after a comprehensive evaluation. They will receive a subsidy of 500 million KRW over the next three years for projects such as modernization of production environment and high-quality production equipment.

To be selected as a fresh agricultural product preliminary export complex, export performance must exceed 10,000 USD. The farms underwent a first document evaluation based on export amount, cultivation area, number of participating farms, and export countries, followed by a second on-site evaluation considering item potential and complex concentration.

The fresh agricultural product preliminary export complex is a system for strategic development through package support from production to export to discover and foster promising export items. It is a preliminary stage before becoming a government-designated export complex. If designated as a government export complex after future evaluations of export and operational status, it will be registered as the nation's first official 'summer radish' export complex.

Oh Joo-hoon, head of Pohang City's Agricultural Food Distribution Division, stated, "The summer radish from Cheongnim-dong, Donghae-myeon, is characterized by good texture and uniform quality." He added, "With the seasonal advantage of summer harvest, we have laid the foundation for export expansion, and we will contribute to farm income through active overseas marketing and support."
