Volunteer Workers in Gwanak-gu Practice Sharing with Low-Income Families through Kimchi-Making

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) will hold the 2020 ‘Kimchi Making and Sharing Day’ event on the 12th at the Gang Gam-chan Garden in Nakseongdae-dong, in collaboration with the Gwanak-gu Volunteer Center.

This event will involve approximately 600 heads of napa cabbage and 1.5 tons of radish. Notably, some of the kimchi ingredients were directly grown and harvested by volunteers from the Gwanak-gu Volunteer Center at the eco-friendly urban garden in Nakseongdae Garden (231-2 Nakseongdae-dong), adding special significance to the event.

About 100 participants, including volunteer camp activists and volunteers, are expected to join the event. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, all participants will undergo temperature checks, wear masks, maintain social distancing, and strictly follow all quarantine guidelines.

The finished kimchi will be distributed through the 21 volunteer camps across Gwanak-gu to approximately 350 low-income father-and-son households, with each receiving one container of napa cabbage kimchi and one of radish kimchi. It is expected that the event will share not only kimchi but also the spirit of ‘neighborly love.’

Additionally, this year, 64 kg of crops such as sweet potatoes, leafy vegetables, and taro were shared. Every year, crops grown in the garden are harvested and delivered to marginalized groups through the Gwanak Food Market, making efforts to spread a culture of sharing and community through the urban garden.

Meanwhile, the district operates a total of 71 urban gardens covering 28,000㎡, including the largest single-area garden in Seoul, the Gang Gam-chan Garden (13,760㎡). In October last year, a 15,000㎡ urban agriculture park was established and is currently in operation.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “In these difficult times due to COVID-19, I hope this event will be an opportunity to build bonds with neighbors, comfort each other, and overcome hardships together. We will continue to do our best to promote sharing through urban agriculture and to create a leading Gwanak-gu where the community thrives.”
