[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Homeplus is conducting open recruitment for new employees for the first time in three years.

Starting from the 6th, Homeplus will hold open recruitment for new employees with an associate degree to work at its supermarket brand Homeplus Express. This is the first time in three years that Homeplus has conducted open recruitment for associate degree holders since 2016 and 2017 after the acquisition by MBK Partners.

Despite the recently frozen offline retail business environment, Homeplus is strengthening its workforce in the steadily growing supermarket (SSM) division, Homeplus Express, while also providing job opportunities for associate degree 'job seekers' who are experiencing severe employment difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic through this open recruitment.

Homeplus explained that this decision reflects a bold commitment to invest manpower in growing businesses despite the uncertain hiring environment in the retail industry caused by COVID-19 and other factors.

Through this open recruitment for associate degree holders, Homeplus plans to select around 70 employees, who will undergo a three-month internship period. After evaluation, the final candidates will be hired as regular employees.

This recruitment, targeting those holding an associate degree or expected to graduate in February 2021, will accept applications until the 20th. After the application deadline, candidates will go through document screening based on their resumes and self-introductions. Interviews will be held in early next month in Seoul (for applicants from Seoul and Gyeonggi areas) and Daejeon (for applicants from Chungcheong and southern regions).

The list of successful candidates is expected to be announced around mid-December, with internship work starting in January next year. Selected interns will complete the internship period by April next year, after which regular employment conversion will proceed based on final job evaluations. Homeplus plans to directly employ more than 80% of the selected interns as regular employees, and final successful candidates will be assigned to work locations according to the demand in Homeplus Express store regions.

Hwang Jeong-hee, Head of Human Resources at Homeplus, said, “This open recruitment for associate degree holders was conducted to provide even a small help to youth employment frozen by COVID-19 and to supplement the workforce shortage at Homeplus Express stores, which have recently shown strong business performance.” She added, “We look forward to active applications from young and energetic candidates.”

Meanwhile, Homeplus Express has shown sales growth of more than 5% compared to the same period last year as of October this year. The increase in average spending per customer has also risen significantly, with the annual average growth rate of spending per customer, which was around 4.5%, approaching 10% this year (as of October).

Currently operating about 340 stores, Homeplus Express plans to operate 103 stores nationwide as ‘fresh and convenience food specialty stores’ by the end of this year (December).
