'Decisive Blow to Blue Wave' Collins, Re-elected to Senate

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Republican Senator Susan Collins, who faced a high possibility of losing against President Donald Trump, has succeeded in her re-election.

According to CNN, on the 4th (local time), Senator Collins defeated Democratic candidate Sarah Gideon in Maine. Collins won with 51% of the vote, beating Gideon, who received 42%, by a relatively large margin.

Senator Collins publicly opposed the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the federal Supreme Court, drawing strong criticism from President Trump. She was widely regarded as likely to lose.

CNN reported that Collins' victory dealt a decisive blow to the Democrats' hopes of securing a Senate majority. Currently, in the Senate elections, the Republicans hold 48 seats, leading the Democrats who have 47 seats.

If candidate Joe Biden wins, the Democrats can secure a majority by holding 50 Senate seats, with the Vice President casting tie-breaking votes, but considering the current vote count, this is not an easy situation.
