[Profile] Park Jin-gyu, New Vice Minister of Industry and Trade... Expert Bureaucrat in Trade

[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] On the 1st, President Moon Jae-in appointed Park Jin-gyu (55), former Secretary for New Southern and New Northern Policies at the Presidential Secretariat, as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Vice Minister Park is regarded as an expert bureaucrat in the field of trade.


Vice Minister Park is from Chunan, Buyeo, and graduated from Daejeon Daesin High School and Seoul National University with a degree in Economics. He later earned a master's degree in International Economics and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Birmingham in the UK.


Vice Minister Park entered public service in 1990 by passing the 34th Administrative Examination. He served as Regional Innovation Support Officer and Gumi Cooperation Division Chief at the Ministry of Industry and Resources. He then worked as Commercial Attach? at the Embassy in the UK and General Policy Director at the Electricity Commission. He also held positions such as Planning and Finance Officer at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Trade Investigation Director at the Trade Commission, and after the ministry was renamed to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, he served as Director General of Trade Policy, Trade Policy Officer, and Director of Planning and Coordination.


After the inauguration of the Moon Jae-in administration, in October 2018, he was appointed Trade Secretary at the Presidential Secretariat, and in January of this year, he moved to the position of Secretary for New Southern and New Northern Policies.
