[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The award ceremony for the ‘2020 PosART Architecture Competition,’ jointly hosted by POSCO Steel Sheet and Seungil Industrial Co., Ltd., was held on the 15th at the POSCO Steel Sheet Seoul Office.

Now in its second year following last year, the PosART Architecture Competition is a contest aimed at university (graduate) students to design housing applying POSCO Steel Sheet products. The theme of this year’s competition was to propose differentiated multi-family housing designs using PosART and printed steel sheets. A total of 37 teams and over 100 participants from across the country showed enthusiastic interest. The winners included 10 teams (1 grand prize, 1 excellence award, 1 merit award, and 7 honorable mentions), selected by experts including Professor Kim Sung-hoon of Konkuk University, Seungil Industrial Co., Ltd., and POSCO Steel Sheet executives, focusing on students’ creativity and practical applicability.

The grand prize was awarded to ‘Value Together: Dreaming of Coexistence with PosART’s ‘Value’’ by Kim Soo-ah, Kim Seo-hyun, and Hwang Soon-young from Sookmyung Women’s University. Centered on the keyword ‘coexistence,’ this work applied PosART’s unique features and interior products throughout the building to create a space where people with diverse lifestyles can comfortably gather. Awardee Kim Soo-ah said, “I wanted to create a coexistence space for those isolated due to social distancing caused by COVID-19. This competition was a meaningful opportunity to consider the future of residential spaces.”

Judge Professor Kim Sung-hoon commented on the work, “It is a multi-family housing design that makes good use of PosART product features, proposing new lifestyles applicable to future residential environments, such as fingerprint recognition induction and scented PosART.” Tae-min Noh, director of Seou Architecture PCM Construction, a subsidiary of Seungil Industrial, shared his review, saying, “Safety and quality of life are important issues in the recent construction market, and this work stands out with creative ideas to enhance these aspects.” The grand prize-winning team received a cash prize of 5 million KRW and an internship opportunity at POSCO Steel Sheet.

POSCO Steel Sheet plans to continuously provide opportunities for university students to easily access steel building materials and to promote eco-friendly architectural designs using these materials. In particular, to ensure that students’ ideas go beyond one-time projects and are applied in actual construction, POSCO Steel Sheet will jointly hold competitions with InnoBuilt Alliance companies such as Seungil Industrial Co., Ltd., which manufacture steel building materials, continuing practical collaboration.
