[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun) has been holding various events since the 18th at Yeongdong Traditional Market, Dogok Market, and Gangnam Gaepo Market, where customers can purchase ancestral ritual items at up to 20% off ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
This event was organized to help revitalize traditional markets, which have been stagnant due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to support small business owners on the brink of collapse. At Yeongdong Traditional Market, ancestral ritual items can be purchased at up to 20% off until the 29th, and at Dogok and Gangnam Gaepo Markets until the 30th.
Customers who spend more than 30,000 won will receive a shopping carrier, and a hands-on experience zone has been set up where visitors can enjoy traditional folk games such as jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking) within the market.
In addition, the district conducted emergency fire safety inspections targeting 10 traditional markets and 1,609 stores, replacing outdated detectors and other fire safety equipment.
In particular, an automated fire system capable of immediately contacting the fire station in case of fire was installed in 110 stores within Yeongdong Traditional Market.
Furthermore, special disinfection measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are continuously being carried out to ensure safe use of the traditional markets.
Lee Seon-hyung, head of the Regional Economy Division, said, “We are creating a traditional market where both residents and merchants can feel safe through proactive facility inspections to prevent fires and safety accidents, as well as a thorough quarantine system.” He added, “We will continue to develop and implement various measures to protect the health and safety of residents and to revive the stagnant local economy.”
