[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 28th that two sites were selected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '2020 Resident Proposal Small-scale Regeneration Project' contest, laying the foundation for development into an urban regeneration New Deal project.

The 'Small-scale Regeneration Project,' in which local residents voluntarily establish plans and directly participate in the project, serves as a catalyst project to expand and lay the foundation for future urban regeneration New Deal projects.

Dong-gu achieved the remarkable feat of being selected for the small-scale regeneration project for two consecutive years, starting with the Gyerim 1-dong 'Mudeung-ro 3·3·3 Renovation Project (project cost 200 million KRW)' selected last year.

The two sites selected this time are ▲ Jiwon 1-dong 'Sotae-dong Communication Flower Wall Blooms' (project cost 400 million KRW) ▲ Jisan 2-dong 'Jisan Connection Flowing with History and Culture' (project cost 300 million KRW), with a total project cost of 700 million KRW, including 350 million KRW in national funding.

Jiwon 1-dong targets the area around Dong-gu Cultural Center, where problems such as housing deterioration, narrow alleys, sewer odors, and illegal dumping of garbage are severe, and will carry out the Jeungsimcheon-ro environmental improvement project utilizing the regional characteristics of the entrance to Mudeungsan National Park and themed alley regeneration projects.

Jisan 2-dong, leveraging Jisan Amusement Park and various humanities heritage as strengths, plans to revitalize the area and establish a differentiated village brand by creating the Jisan Connection Road through storytelling connecting martyr Lee Han-yeol, painter Oh Ji-ho, poet Moon Byung-ran, and Jisan Amusement Park, thereby promoting tourism resources.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, "This selection is even more meaningful as it was achieved after residents voluntarily prepared the application through resident council workshops," and added, "We will strive to expand resident participation and strengthen capabilities in the small-scale regeneration projects, which are point-based regeneration projects promoted by local communities, so that they can develop into New Deal projects."
