[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 14th that it has decided to reapprove Hyundai Home Shopping and NS Shopping following the TV home shopping reapproval review committee's evaluation.
The approval validity period is 5 years each, with Hyundai Home Shopping's term from the 28th of this month to May 27, 2025, and NS Home Shopping's term from June 4 to June 3, 2025.
To ensure expertise and fairness in the review, the Ministry of Science and ICT formed the 'TV Home Shopping Reapproval Review Committee' composed of external experts in six fields: broadcasting, law, economics and management, accounting, technology, and viewers and consumers. The committee conducted a closed review from the 11th to this day. As a result, Hyundai Home Shopping scored 734.17 points, and NS Shopping scored 716.71 points. Both met the reapproval criteria by achieving scores above the standard in the critical category of 'Establishment of Fair Trade Practices and Contribution to the Revitalization of Small and Medium Enterprises.'
This review focused on key items related to the public responsibilities of home shopping, such as establishing fair trade practices, protecting and supporting small suppliers, and safeguarding the rights and interests of viewers and consumers. In particular, the committee emphasized matters related to home shopping sales commission rates and investments in broadcasting facilities and technology to ensure stable broadcast transmission and prevent transmission accidents.
The review committee also proposed reapproval conditions for Hyundai Home Shopping and NS Shopping to secure the public functions of home shopping, including revitalizing small and medium enterprises, expanding sales channels for agricultural, fishery, livestock, and forestry products, and creating a fair trade environment.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to finalize the reapproval conditions by comprehensively considering the committee's proposals, policy directions such as support for small and medium enterprise sales channels, and the establishment purposes of home shopping operators. In May, the ministry will issue approval certificates with imposed reapproval conditions and conduct regular compliance inspections to ensure faithful adherence to the approval conditions going forward.
