[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Kooksoondang announced on the 14th that it will officially export its new makgeolli product containing prebiotics, ‘100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli,’ to the United States.


Launched last month, the 100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli is the second product in Kooksoondang’s popular ‘100 Billion Probiotic Makgeolli’ series and is a premium-grade makgeolli priced at 3,500 KRW in major domestic supermarkets.


Each bottle (750ml) of 100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli contains more than 10 billion heat-treated lactic acid bacteria cultures and 1,000 mg of fructooligosaccharides, a prebiotic substance. The heat-treated lactic acid bacteria cultures and fructooligosaccharides help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the body while suppressing harmful bacteria, thereby aiding immune system enhancement.


Kooksoondang is launching full-scale exports of 100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli amid strong demand, with additional inquiries for stocking from local distributors and retailers in the U.S. Following this export, the company plans to actively explore overseas markets for premium-grade makgeolli.


Kooksoondang and local distributors and retailers expect growing interest in ‘100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli,’ which contains ingredients that help boost immunity, as the popularity of prebiotic-related products has increased in the U.S. due to factors such as COVID-19. Additionally, they anticipate expanding the consumer base to younger generations in their 20s and 30s in the U.S., fueled by the rising trend of low-alcohol beverages among young people.


The product exported to the U.S. is identical to the domestic version, with an alcohol content of 5% and a volume of 750ml. It is made using 100% domestically grown rice, contributing to the export of Korean agricultural products.


Kooksoondang plans to actively promote exports of 100 Billion Prebio Makgeolli to countries other than the U.S., aiming to establish a premium image for Korea’s traditional liquor, makgeolli, and pioneer new markets for premium makgeolli exports.
