[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) is promoting an alley shared parking project that allows individuals to share privately owned parking spaces in single-family, multi-family, and multi-household residences with others.

This is a public-private cooperation project by Mapo-gu to alleviate parking difficulties by sharing parking spaces within residential alleys, going beyond the limitations of existing resident-priority parking zones and public parking lots.

The sharing method involves residents who own parking spaces offering their parking spots to other drivers during desired time slots through a smartphone app called "Modu-ui Juchajang" (Everyone's Parking Lot).

To use the service, parking space owners register on the smartphone app "Modu-ui Juchajang" and share their parking spaces at their preferred times. Users who need parking can pay in minimum 30-minute increments during the shared time period and use the parking space.

The usage fee for shared parking spaces is set at 1,000 KRW per 30 minutes.

Owners who share their parking spaces receive 70% of the parking fee as income and can also receive support such as parking space painting and installation of guide signs.

The biggest advantage of using the smartphone app for shared parking is that users can easily and conveniently check the availability of parking spaces without having to visit the site in person.

This year, Mapo-gu selected four pilot neighborhoods?Sinsu-dong, Hapjeong-dong, Yeonnam-dong, and Seogyo-dong?and in March, publicly recruited a total of 24 alley parking sharing activists to promote the project.

The sharing activists will visit residential areas until November to secure shared parking spaces in alleys and promote app registration and usage methods to residents.

Applications for shared parking are possible not only in the four pilot neighborhoods but throughout all areas of Mapo-gu. The district is considering expanding the project to all neighborhoods based on the 2021 project evaluation.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Resident-priority parking and public parking lots alone have not resolved residents’ parking inconveniences. We hope many residents will take interest and participate in this shared parking project, which has become essential in this era.”
