Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research Institute Lends a Helping Hand in Garlic Fields of Yeongcheon, Working Hard with Beads of Sweat

Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research Institute staff members are taking a commemorative photo after removing garlic scapes in a garlic field in Yeongcheon on the 13th.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that on the 13th, employees from the Agricultural Technology Center's Technology Extension Division visited garlic farms in Yeongcheon City to carry out garlic scape removal work in preparation for the full-scale farming season.

This volunteer work was organized to provide some assistance to farms struggling to secure labor due to the imbalance in the supply of foreign seasonal workers caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

On that day, the employees adhered to social distancing guidelines such as wearing masks, maintaining distance, and refraining from conversation while helping with the work, and also conducted farm consulting on garlic cultivation techniques.

Kim Hyun-ok, Director of the Rural Support Bureau, said, "Although it was a short time, it was a meaningful opportunity to sweat together on site and feel the hard work of farmers," adding, "The Agricultural Technology Center will also develop various projects to support rural areas facing difficulties such as decreased agricultural product consumption and labor shortages due to COVID-19."
