Gwangju Buk-gu, Initiative to Improve Working Conditions for Non-Regular Workers in Apartment Complexes

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Moon In) announced on the 26th that starting next month, it will promote the ‘2020 Improvement Project for Working Environment of Non-Regular Workers in Apartment Complexes’ to enable security guards and cleaners working in apartment complexes to live in a pleasant environment.

Accordingly, support will be provided for apartment complexes with a private area of 85㎡ or less (excluding rental and company apartments) that have passed 20 years since the usage inspection (constructed before December 31, 1999), covering 80% of the project cost per complex, up to a maximum of 16 million KRW.

The support includes construction work to relocate underground break rooms to above ground (support for illegal expansion facilities in basements is not allowed), expansion and repair of break rooms, installation of heating and cooling systems, and ventilation facilities.

The selection of target complexes will be finalized for 8 to 9 complexes through the ‘Apartment Complex Support Deliberation Committee’ next month, based on selection criteria such as the aging condition of facilities, complex size, and the possibility of self-payment.

In particular, priority will be given to small-scale apartment complexes over 30 years old and complexes where underground break rooms are relocated above ground, which have poor working environments.

Moon In, Mayor of Buk-gu, said, “Through this project, I hope that non-regular employees working as cleaners or security guards in apartment complexes can work in better environments,” and added, “We will continue to spare no support to improve the treatment of non-regular workers, including working conditions and human rights.”
