[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Inha University has been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Urban Regeneration Specialist Training' public project and will receive 1.15 billion KRW in national funding over five years.
Accordingly, Inha University plans to establish a Department of Urban Regeneration in its Graduate School and operate master's and doctoral education programs to train urban regeneration specialists for Incheon and the southwestern metropolitan area.
They will recruit about 30 new students in early next month and start the first classes at the end of August. Scholarships will be provided for undergraduate research students, urban regeneration preliminary specialists, and experts holding national technical certifications.
This public project is a major initiative reported to the Urban Regeneration Special Committee in October last year, aiming to cultivate convergent and interdisciplinary talents encompassing urban planning, architecture, economics, culture, welfare, and governance.
The competition was fierce. More than 30 of the nation's top national and private universities submitted project proposals. After the first document screening, 10 universities were selected, followed by a second presentation evaluation and a third on-site visit evaluation, with Inha University ultimately chosen.
Inha University proposed a cooperative model with regional universities such as Cheongwoon University, Incheon Catholic University, and Inha Technical College to successfully operate the urban regeneration master's and doctoral education programs and the hub education institution consortium.
Additionally, memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for mutual cooperation were signed with local governments including Incheon City and Gyeonggi's Bucheon, Ansan, Gimpo, and Pyeongtaek cities; public enterprises such as Incheon Port Authority, LH Corporation Incheon Headquarters, and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation; urban corporations in Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Ansan, Hwaseong, Siheung, and Bucheon; Incheon Urban Regeneration Support Center; Village Community Support Center; Social Economy Support Center; Incheon City Architectural Society; private companies; and civic groups.
Professor Kim Kyung-bae of Inha University's Department of Architecture, who is in charge of the project, said, "Inha University will start education to nurture proper urban regeneration experts who understand regional characteristics and possess planning, execution, communication, character, and practical skills. We will establish a governance system where the region and university work together to create the nation's top urban regeneration hub education institution and consortium."
