33 COVID-19 Cases Reported on US Destroyer Kidd

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] It has been confirmed that the number of COVID-19 cases on a U.S. destroyer nearly doubled in one day.

According to the U.S. daily The New York Times and others, on the destroyer Kidd, which was on a mission in the South American Pacific Ocean with a crew of 350, the number of COVID-19 positive cases increased from 18 confirmed the previous day to a total of 33 as of the 25th (local time). The destroyer was engaged in drug interdiction missions.

The U.S. Navy stated that medical personnel on board are continuing to conduct COVID-19 diagnostic tests on the crew. It also added that another naval ship is en route to provide medical support if needed at sea. Two crew members were transferred to the United States for treatment.

Previously, on the U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, over 850 COVID-19 cases were confirmed among approximately 5,000 crew members. In Japan, multiple cases have also been reported on a U.S.-flagged cruise ship, indicating that onboard infections can spread rapidly.
