After the Full-Scale Spread of COVID-19, Interest in 'Cheongso-gi' Explodes

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Interest in 'vacuum cleaners' has surged sharply due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) crisis.

In particular, after the occurrence of the 31st confirmed COVID-19 case, the amount of information about vacuum cleaners from five companies increased steeply.

On the 15th, the Global Big Data Research Institute investigated the big data volume of LG Electronics, Dyson, Samsung Electronics, Dibea, and Xiaomi across 12 channels including news, communities, blogs, cafes, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, KakaoStory, Knowledge iN, companies/organizations, and government/public sectors.

The investigation periods were divided into two: from January 1 to February 17, and from February 18, when the 31st COVID-19 confirmed case occurred, to April 12.

For LG Electronics vacuum cleaners, the information volume was 17,686 cases from January 1 to February 17, but interest surged by 19,638 cases (111.04%) to 37,324 cases from February 18 to April 12.

Dyson products increased from 15,609 cases in the first period to 31,225 cases in the second period, a 100.04% rise.

Samsung Electronics vacuum cleaners skyrocketed by 127.23%, from 13,477 cases between January 1 and February 17 to 30,624 cases between February 18 and April 12.

Dibea vacuum cleaners also rose by 93.33%, from 12,982 cases to 25,098 cases during the same periods.

For Xiaomi products, the volume increased by 102.70%, from 9,818 cases to 19,901 cases, but the absolute interest was the lowest among the five companies' products.

An institute official stated, "As COVID-19 prolongs, interest in 'hygiene' and 'cleanliness' has surged sharply, which appears to have caused the rapid increase in information volume about vacuum cleaners."
