[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Emart announced on the 15th that it will hold a ‘Newtro’ special exhibition from the 16th to the 29th, a two-week event offering up to 40% discounts by gathering nostalgic foods, limited edition retro products from long-established brands, and nostalgic stationery items.

‘Newtro (Retro+New)’ is a newly coined term meaning to enjoy retro in a newly reinterpreted way. Emart prepared this special exhibition so that people of all generations can enjoy the fun of offline shopping amid prolonged social distancing.

In this event, Emart carefully selected nostalgic foods reminiscent of the 70s and 80s, such as ‘frozen samgyeopsal’ grilled on foil-covered pans and ‘old-fashioned whole chicken’ packed in yellow paper bags, as well as products recreating various nostalgic games that have become popular on social networking services (SNS).

Until the 22nd, 60 tons of ‘Nostalgic Frozen Samgyeopsal (domestic)’ will be sold at 11,200 KRW (per 1kg/pack) with a 20% discount for customers who accumulate Shinsegae Point Cards. This price is about 40% cheaper than domestic fresh samgyeopsal.

The ‘Old-fashioned Whole Chicken,’ freshly fried in-store using the traditional method, will also be offered at 6,000 KRW (domestic/per chicken) in specially made yellow paper bags, just like in the past. It is made by coating domestic fresh chicken with a thin powder, resulting in a crispy exterior and moist interior texture.

Limited edition ‘retro products’ such as ‘Maxim,’ ‘Del Monte,’ and ‘Chilsung Cider,’ which have caused a craze for photo-taking and even sold out, will also be featured in the event. Additionally, ‘Nostalgic Stationery Play Sets,’ ‘Nostalgic Paper Doll Sets,’ and a ‘Dalgona Set’ consisting of five cooking tools for dalgona candy such as ladles, presses, and molds will be sold.

Choi Hoonhak, Executive Director of Marketing at Emart, said, “As the demand for content that can provide small pleasures and fun in daily life is increasing due to prolonged social distancing, we prepared this special exhibition with ‘Newtro’ related products that can attract interest from various age groups. We will continue marketing experiments that allow customers to enjoy the fun of offline shopping from their perspective.”
