[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The barren embankment of Cheonggyecheon, once tangled with vines and weeds, transforms into a flower garden filled with roses and plum blossoms in May.

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Wono) is carrying out a planting project to create a flower garden with 15 species including roses, plum trees, and various flowering plants along the embankment slope of Cheonggyecheon from Gosan-ja Bridge to the 2nd Majang Bridge, covering about 1 km.

Cheonggyecheon is one of Seoul's landmarks, running through Jongno-gu starting from Cheonggye Plaza, Jung-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, and Seongdong-gu. Among these, Seongdong-gu manages the embankment slopes from Gosan-ja Bridge in Majang-dong to the confluence with Jungnangcheon in Yongdap-dong.

The embankment slope section managed by Seongdong-gu from Gosan-ja Bridge to the 2nd Majang Bridge has long been overrun by invasive plants such as invasive vines like Humulus scandens and Ambrosia trifida, as well as kudzu, which disrupt the ecosystem and hinder the growth of native plants, making it difficult for trees and flowers to thrive.

Accordingly, the district will remove trees that are not growing well, those at risk of falling, and vines that interfere with the growth of other plants to maintain the green area.

After maintenance, 32,000 flowering plants of 15 species including Aster tataricus, 26,650 plant mats of 4 species including Miscanthus sinensis, 13,610 rose bushes of 11 species, and 385 trees of 2 species including plum trees will be planted to create a colorful walking path throughout the year.

In addition, to minimize the occurrence of vines and weeds, the existing soil will be completely replaced to secure soil health, creating a growth environment where flowering plants can thrive well.

A district official said, “With this planting project, the embankment path will offer seasonal beauty to enjoy, starting with the scent of white plum blossoms in spring, roses in summer, and a path of silver grass in autumn.” He added, “Work will begin at the end of April and is expected to be completed by May.”

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We hope this project will provide healing through the beauty of nature to residents who have been emotionally strained due to COVID-19.” He added, “We hope not only Seongdong residents but also those from neighboring areas can enjoy the pleasant riverside environment of Cheonggyecheon.”
