Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. reported that as of 4:30 PM (Eastern Time) on the same day, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States was 589,048. The death toll was 25,163.

In New York State, which has the highest number of COVID-19 patients in the U.S., the number of cases surged to 202,630. On this day, the number of deaths in New York State increased by 778, totaling 10,834. The number of deaths, which had dropped to the 600s the day before, showed an increasing trend again.

However, the number of hospitalizations in New York showed a 1% decrease since the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, bringing new hope. Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York, said, "The COVID-19 situation in New York is at a peak plateau," indicating that the COVID-19 infection crisis has reached its peak.

Cuomo, who is leading discussions on economic reopening among six eastern states, said on the same day, "People need to go back to work. New York needs the economy. We cannot sustain this (suppression measures) for a long time," while adding, "We are talking about a phased reopening."

This shows a significant difference from President Donald Trump's view, who claims that he has the authority to consider a tentative economic normalization on May 1.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the U.S. National Institutes of Health, also said in an interview with AP News on the same day that the economic normalization on May 1 is "somewhat overly optimistic."

Larry Kudlow, director of the White House National Economic Council, said in an interview with Fox Business on the same day that "President Trump will make a very important announcement regarding the normalization of the U.S. economy within a few days."
