Gwangyang-si, 50% Reduction in Water and Sewage Charges

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] To revive the struggling local economy due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, local governments are implementing various policies for residents, drawing attention.

On the 21st, Gwangyang City in Jeonnam announced that it will temporarily reduce water and sewage fees for two months for all citizens experiencing economic difficulties due to the prolonged economic downturn caused by COVID-19.

This reduction applies because the disaster crisis alert level is at the 'serious' stage, and with the prolonged COVID-19 situation, it was judged that not only self-employed and small business owners but also citizens would face significant economic impacts. Therefore, the city decided to apply the fee reduction regulations under Article 40 of the Gwangyang City Water Supply Ordinance to all citizens.

The reduction targets household, general, and industrial use (18,600 accounts), and citizens do not need to apply separately. A 50% reduction will be applied for two months starting from the April billing. This is expected to provide a total economic benefit of 1.8 billion KRW.

However, government offices and mid-sized companies or larger are excluded from the fee reduction.

Mayor Jeong Hyun-bok of Gwangyang said, “I hope the reduction in water and sewage fees will be of some help to citizens facing economic difficulties due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. We will devote all administrative efforts and capabilities to reviving the local economy until the COVID-19 situation is overcome and concluded.”
