Kim Daejung, Superintendent of Education for Jeonnam, has completed his preliminary candidate registration for Superintendent of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City in the 9th Nationwide Local Elections, officially launching his bid for re-election. As this is the first election to be held since Jeonnam and Gwangju were administratively integrated, local communities are closely watching Kim's vision for education that encompasses both regions.
On the morning of the 10th at 11 a.m., Superintendent Kim visited the Gwangju Election Commission to complete his preliminary candidate registration. After registering, he expressed his strong intention to run, stating, "Based on achievements such as the Jeonnam Student Education Allowance and the establishment of 2030 Future Classrooms, I will thoroughly prepare for future education and fully realize integrated education for Jeonnam and Gwangju."
Superintendent Kim especially emphasized the rapidly changing future society and the historic transition represented by the integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju.

View original imageHe said, "For our students, this is an important opportunity to grow their dreams even further, but it also requires thorough preparation. Fortunately, through the 'Great Transformation of Jeonnam Education,' we have supported Jeonnam students in developing the competencies needed to lead future society." He highlighted that his experience and achievements in public administration are core strengths for leading the integrated education office.
With the election campaign in full swing, Superintendent Kim has also completed forming his campaign team to appeal to voters in both Gwangju and Jeonnam. He opened a campaign office in Sangmu District, Gwangju, and set up a supporters' office in Suncheon, Jeonnam.
On the 15th, he is scheduled to hold back-to-back press conferences to announce detailed integrated education policies and pledges: at 11 a.m. at Gwangju YMCA, and at 2 p.m. at the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education.
Originally from Gokseong, Superintendent Kim graduated from Gwangju Dongsin High School and the Department of Philosophy at Chonnam National University. After being dismissed from his teaching post at Mokpo Jeongmyeong Girls' High School due to activities with the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, he served three terms as a Mokpo City Council member and chairperson, and was an executive board member of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, gaining experience in both civil society and politics. After working as Chief Secretary at the Jeonnam Office of Education, he returned to teaching after more than 30 years and was elected Superintendent of Education for Jeonnam in the 2022 local elections.
