Considering Dispatching Ministers to "Takeshima Day" Event
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has stated that she will make the international community aware of Japan's claim that Dokdo is Japanese territory.
According to Kyodo News, on March 12, Prime Minister Takaichi said during a session of the House of Representatives Budget Committee that she would "firmly inform the international community of the perception that Dokdo is Japanese territory." Regarding the dispatch of a cabinet minister for 'Takeshima Day,' she added, "I intend to create an environment so that this can be realized someday."
Prime Minister Takaichi, who took office in October last year, had implied during the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election that a higher-ranking cabinet minister, rather than the vice-ministerial-level officials previously sent by the Japanese government, should attend the 'Takeshima Day' event. However, on February 22, in accordance with precedent, she dispatched a parliamentary vice minister for 'Takeshima Day.' At that time, Naoki Furukawa, Parliamentary Vice Minister of the Cabinet Office, stated that "in terms of historical facts and international law, Dokdo is clearly our country's (Japan's) inherent territory."
