The "Seoul Subway Line 5 Gimpo Geomdan Extension Project" has finally passed the preliminary feasibility study (hereinafter referred to as the preliminary feasibility study). Not only will this significantly reduce the commute time for Gimpo residents traveling to central Seoul, but it is also expected to resolve the congestion issues on the Gimpo Gold Line, which has been dubbed the "hell train."
Gyeonggi Province Governor Dongyeon Kim announced on the 10th that the Seoul Subway Line 5 extension project to Gimpo Geomdan passed the policy comprehensive evaluation (AHP) with a score exceeding the pass standard of 0.5 during the review held by the Financial Project Evaluation Subcommittee of the Planning and Budget Office, thus recognizing the project's feasibility. The Seoul Subway Line 5 Gimpo Geomdan Extension Project is a large-scale metropolitan railway project spanning a total length of 25.8 kilometers, connecting Banghwa Station in Seoul through Incheon Geomdan New Town to Gimpo Hangang 2 Compact City. The project is expected to require a budget of 3.3302 trillion won, and it is anticipated to play a significant role in improving congestion for users of the Gimpo Gold Line—a light rail urban railway line connecting Gimpo City and Seoul Gimpo Airport—which has been plagued by severe overcrowding issues that threaten passenger safety.
Dongyeon Kim, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, commented on the project's passage through the preliminary feasibility study, saying, "The preliminary feasibility approval for the Seoul Subway Line 5 Gimpo Geomdan extension project is the result of the long-cherished wishes of residents in the northwestern region of the metropolitan area and the earnest hopes of Gimpo citizens. We will do our utmost to ensure that the follow-up procedures proceed smoothly so that construction can commence as soon as possible."
Governor Kim had previously attended the Planning and Budget Office's SOC Subcommittee of the Financial Project Evaluation, held at the Korea Development Institute (KDI) in Sejong City on the 5th, to personally explain the importance of the Gimpo Geomdan extension route, actively working to ensure the project's passage through the preliminary feasibility study.
At the subcommittee meeting, Governor Kim stated, "Gimpo currently has a population of about 500,000, and eight public housing developments are underway. Once all of these developments are completed, the population is expected to increase by up to 200,000. This will only worsen the current traffic crisis," adding, "The Line 5 Gimpo Geomdan extension is not simply an expansion of the transportation network but a matter of residents' right to survival."
