Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on November 10 that it has established a new temporary task force (TF) dedicated to the integrated redevelopment of aging public office buildings. The company will be responsible for transforming old public office buildings in urban areas into multifunctional community hubs, as part of the government’s initiative to expand housing supply in the Seoul metropolitan area.

Previously, the government revealed in its housing supply expansion plan announced in September that it would redevelop public office buildings and state-owned land to provide approximately 28,000 new homes in the Seoul metropolitan area by 2030. The TF has been set up as a dedicated organization to accelerate these projects, with the goal of overseeing the entire integrated development process. Additionally, it will support cooperation between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, LH, and local governments, as well as take on responsibilities such as identifying new project sites, establishing business models for each type of integrated development, and improving relevant systems and regulations.

Through the integrated redevelopment of aging public office buildings, LH has so far constructed 4,956 housing units across 28 districts. In September of last year, LH utilized the site of an old community center in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, to build the Cheonho 3-dong Public Complex Building. The building houses a community center, a small library, a daycare center, and a senior citizens’ center on the first to sixth floors, while the seventh to fourteenth floors contain 94 public rental housing units.

Kang Osun, Head of the Regional Balanced Development Division at LH, stated, "The integrated redevelopment of aging public office buildings is a business model that can simultaneously expand housing supply, utilize aging public assets, and revitalize local communities."
