Gyeongnam Provincial Council: "Sacheon Airport Must Be Upgraded to International Airport" ... Issues Statement

The Gyeongnam Provincial Council has urged the government to include the upgrade of Sacheon Airport to an international airport in the 7th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan.

On September 9, immediately after the first plenary session of the 426th extraordinary meeting, the council issued a statement titled "Statement Urging the Inclusion of Sacheon Airport's Upgrade to an International Airport in the National Plan."

The council stated, "We are making every effort to establish Sacheon as a global aerospace hub centered around the Korea Aerospace Administration," and added, "Securing international airport infrastructure is extremely important and essential for this goal. However, no national-level measures have been implemented to enable Sacheon Airport to function as an international airport."

The council pointed out, "Under these circumstances, there are limits to establishing a global aerospace hub centered on the Korea Aerospace Administration. We cannot expect advancement in Korea's aerospace industry, revitalization of tourism in the southern region, or balanced regional development."

The council further emphasized, "Upgrading Sacheon Airport to an international airport is essential to ensure that Korea's aerospace industry does not fall behind in international competition."

They collectively stated, "The 7th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan, which is currently being formulated, must include the task of upgrading Sacheon Airport."

The council announced that it will carry out a province-wide signature campaign to facilitate the smooth promotion of Sacheon Airport's upgrade to an international airport.

In addition, the council plans to continue persuading the government and the National Assembly by cooperating with Gyeongnam Province and relevant cities and counties.
