The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that at 2:00 p.m. on September 9, 2025, it will hold a current issues review meeting at the Cheongju Convention Center (OSCO) for public officials in charge of tourism development from 15 metropolitan governments.

During this meeting, the Ministry will review the progress of major tourism development projects, including the Metropolitan Tourism Development Project, the Tourism Hub City Development Project, the Plan-Based Regional Tourism Development Project, and the 'K-Tourism Island' Initiative. The Ministry will also diagnose the causes of underperforming projects and discuss solutions. In addition, the Ministry will listen to the difficulties and suggestions encountered by each local government during project implementation, share the causes of underperforming projects, and work to prevent similar cases from occurring in the future.

The Ministry also plans to provide guidance on the basic direction and necessary elements for establishing the 8th Regional Tourism Development Plan. The Regional Tourism Development Plan is a statutory mid-term plan established every five years by the heads of city and provincial governments (excluding the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province), based on higher-level plans such as the Basic Tourism Development Plan. It outlines the specific direction for tourism development that each region (metropolitan city or province) should pursue. In this meeting, the Ministry will assess and evaluate tourism projects implemented in each region over the past five years, seek normalization measures for these projects, and support the establishment of a mid-term implementation strategy for tourism development in each region for the next five years. Additionally, the Ministry will explain the introduction of a performance management system currently being prepared to enhance the efficiency of tourism development projects and gather feedback from local governments.

The Ministry stated that it plans to expand the current issues review meetings, which are currently held semiannually, in order to better respond to the rapidly changing tourism environment.

Kim Geunho, Director General for Tourism Industry Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "This meeting serves as an opportunity to share regional issues and discuss solutions. It will help the Ministry implement field-oriented tourism policies," adding, "We will continue to do our best to address regional issues through tourism."
