Participation in North America's Largest Energy Industry Exhibition
Unveiling Products Optimized for the U.S. ESS Market
On September 9 (local time), Samsung SDI participated in 'RE+ (Renewable Energy Plus) 2025,' the largest energy industry exhibition in North America, which opened in Las Vegas, United States, and unveiled its next-generation battery product lineup optimized for the U.S. energy storage system (ESS) market.
Samsung SDI set up five exhibition zones: Samsung Battery Box (SBB), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), Prismatic, USA Production, and Award. The company showcased its new SBB products, high-power batteries for UPS, and advanced prismatic battery technologies.
In particular, targeting the rapidly growing U.S. ESS market, Samsung SDI attracted attention with the slogan "All-American, Proven & Ready," highlighting its local production capabilities in the United States and its differentiated ESS technology.
First Unveiling of New SBB Lineup Produced in the United States
The highlight of the exhibition was the next-generation SBB products, 'SBB 1.7' and 'SBB 2.0,' displayed in the SBB Zone. These products, unveiled for the first time at this exhibition, will be produced locally in the United States starting next year.
SBB 1.7 is equipped with a high-energy-density nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) battery. While the container size remains the same as SBB 1.5, its capacity has increased by about 17% to 6.14MWh.
SBB 2.0, which features a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for the first time, was also unveiled. SBB 2.0 applies Samsung SDI's unique prismatic form factor along with differentiated materials and electrode plate technologies, overcoming the low energy density that has been a drawback of conventional LFP batteries, while maximizing advantages such as safety and cost-effectiveness.
The SBB is a power ESS battery solution that maximizes customer convenience and performance by installing batteries and safety devices in a 20-foot container. It incorporates Samsung SDI's proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI) fire suppression technology, artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive fault diagnosis, and lifespan prediction algorithms, achieving industry-leading safety and longevity through its ESS design expertise.
With the recent strengthening of local production requirements to qualify for ESS subsidies under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and increasing supply chain risks due to tariffs, Samsung SDI plans to meet U.S. customer demand by producing new SBB products with both NCA and LFP battery materials locally in the United States.
High-Power UPS Battery Tailored for AI Data Centers on Display
At the center of the booth, Samsung SDI showcased its high-power UPS battery, 'U8A1.'
U8A1 was the only product from a Korean company to win the Innovation Award at 'The Smarter E Europe 2025' held in Germany last May. By delivering high power and high energy density, the product improves space efficiency by 33% compared to previous models, enabling data centers to meet their power requirements more quickly and reliably with fewer batteries. Unlike typical UPS batteries that operate only during emergencies such as power outages, U8A1 also stabilizes power quality during surges in AI power demand, making it an optimal product for UPS customers.
Samsung SDI's UPS battery uses its proprietary prismatic battery form factor with lithium manganese oxide (LMO) materials, ensuring both high-power performance and safety. It has also passed the U.S. fire safety test (UL9540A). With major U.S. IT companies recently investing heavily in AI data centers and increasing UPS demand, Samsung SDI plans to widely promote the innovative features of its products in the U.S. market.
Showcasing Samsung SDI's Differentiated Prismatic Battery Technology
Samsung SDI's prismatic batteries feature an aluminum can structure, which offers excellent durability and thermal conductivity. They are equipped with safety-enhancing design technologies such as vents and fuses. In addition, the 'No TP (No Thermal Propagation)' technology prevents heat from spreading to adjacent cells in case of fire. No TP technology is designed to prevent thermal propagation within the battery, and Samsung SDI's proprietary thermal propagation performance prediction program enables optimal structural design to prevent fire spread.
Samsung SDI's prismatic batteries achieve high energy density through differentiated safety technologies and methods such as Z-Stacking, earning recognition for their technological prowess in the global ESS market.
In addition, the USA Production Zone and Award Zone highlight Samsung SDI's ESS supply chain system in the U.S. market and showcase the award history of its ESS products.
