China's "high jump star" Xiao Wuqi, 23, is drawing significant attention in her home country thanks to her outstanding athletic ability and striking appearance. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on September 5, Xiao, a member of the Hubei Province athletics team in central China, won the high jump event at the Chinese Athletics Championships on September 1 by clearing 1.90 meters. A video of her victory went viral online, receiving over 3 million "likes."

Xiao's talent was recognized early on, as she easily cleared 1 meter during her elementary school years. In 2020, she entered the prestigious Tsinghua University, gaining attention as an athlete who combines both intelligence and physical strength. Local media have described her as "someone who possesses both looks and skill" and "a woman who embodies both strength and beauty."

"I hope for encouragement rather than criticism..." Xiao appeals

However, as her popularity has grown, so has the criticism. In her interview, Xiao revealed that she often encounters comments such as, "The world record is 2.10 meters, so what's there to be proud of?" In response, she said, "The level of women's high jump is continuously rising," and appealed, "I hope for encouragement rather than being put down."

Xiao has consistently faced controversy over her appearance. She has been criticized for wearing makeup, keeping her hair long, and taking care of her nails, with some saying these are not "athlete-like" behaviors. She firmly rebutted these remarks, stating, "These are things we should decide for ourselves," and added, "I just want to look pretty. I don't care what others say." She went on to emphasize, "I am a champion, and I am a strong and beautiful woman."
