This discussion followed the Northern Gyeonggi Grand Transformation Project announced by Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province last September. At that time, Governor Kim stated, “We will actively work to expand advanced industrial infrastructure in the northern region, boldly delegate authority, and resolve the metropolitan area’s reverse discrimination.”
Nam Young-sik, Senior Research Fellow at the Daejeon Sejong Research Institute, attended the meeting as a keynote speaker on the topic of ‘Trends and Development Plans for the Drone Industry.’ He proposed institutional conditions such as establishing a drone special free zone and a drone demonstration city, expert consulting support, and corporate support measures including benefits for spatial occupancy as strategies to attract excellent companies.
Lee Won-woong, Head of Strategic Business at Gyeonggi Daejin Technopark, presented the ‘Drone Industry Development Strategy for the Digital Transformation of Northern Gyeonggi,’ suggesting northern Gyeonggi as a hub for the defense drone industry considering the geographical characteristics of the military border area and global warfare trends.
Yangju City and Pocheon City are each proactively promoting initiatives to expand the drone industry base, such as △ establishing a public-private-military advanced drone multi-education center and a military drone bot testing and evaluation support center, and △ building an indoor drone flight center and establishing a drone bot talent education center, respectively, requesting Gyeonggi Province’s active efforts for regulatory improvements.
Gyeonggi Province plans to develop northern Gyeonggi, which has excellent location conditions such as military training grounds, into a base for the national defense and defense drone industry to enhance the competitiveness of drone companies and revitalize the drone industry ecosystem.
