[김맹녕의 골프영어회화] "범프 앤드 런 샷"

범프 앤드 런 샷은 한국과 같은 지형이 높은 코스의 그린에서 좋은 성적을 내기 위해 반드시 마스터를 해야 하는 기술이다.

'범프 앤드 런 샷(bump and run shot)'.

한국의 산악지형이나 스코틀랜드 링크스코스처럼 바람이 강한 골프장에서 유용한 기술이다. 공을 띄우면 방향이 틀어지기 때문이다. 범프 앤드 런은 그린 앞 언덕에 떨어뜨려 속도를 줄인 뒤 굴러가게 만들어 홀 주변에 멈추는 어프로치 샷이다(A 'bump and run shot' is where you hit the ball into the bank, making it bounce deaden the speed of a ball and roll up onto the green).

다른 말로는 '뱅크 샷(bank shot)' 또는 '칩 앤드 런(also called a chip and run)'으로 표현한다. 공이 가는 경로에 나무나 워터해저드가 없고, 잔디가 딱딱할 때 효과를 본다(Any time you've got a shot with no hazard, trees, or rough in your way and the turf is firm, the bump-and-run may be best option). 범프(bump)는 동사로 '부딪히다', 명사로는 도로에서 속도를 내지 못하게 설치한 '스피드 억제물(speed bump)'이다.

피칭 웨지(PW)부터 5번 아이언까지(lower-lofted club) 다양한 선택이 가능하다. 샷 요령이다. 1. 공은 스탠스 중앙 또는 우측(middle or back of the stance)에 놓고, 체중은 왼쪽 '6' 오른쪽이 '4'다. 2. 낮은 탄도를 만들고(producing a very shallow trajectory), 공을 살짝 띄운다(very little airtime for the ball). 3. 퍼팅하는 것처럼 쳐서 깃대를 향해 굴린다(the ball mostly scooting along the ground and running up to the flag). 4. 그립은 약간 짧게 쥐어 컨트롤을 쉽게 한다(Choke down the grip for easy control).
