Super Junior's Kang-in [SM Entertainment]
Kang-in of iconic K-pop group Super Junior has confirmed his role in the Japanese production of musical "Goong."
A rep with SM Entertainment told the magazine in a phone interview Monday that Kang-in signed on to play the role of Lee Shin in the Japanese version of "Goong," which is set to raise its curtains at the U-Port Hall in Tokyo starting September 1.
Adapted from the popular comic book of the same name by Park So-hee, "Goong" was previously adapted into MBC's TV series starring Yoon Eun-hye and Ju Ji-hoon in 2006.
With the popularity of the drama, the broadcaster later aired a sequel with the title "Goong S" the next year, featuring singer Se7en and actress Heo Yi-jae.
The musical version was first staged in September 2010 at the National Museum of Korea directed by Group 8, which is famous for reproducing popular TV dramas into musicals, such as “Boys Over Flowers” (KBS, 2009) and "Naughty Kiss" (MBC, 2010).
Kang-in, whose real name is Kim Young-woon, enlisted in the army in July 2010, and was discharged on April 16 after fulfilling his two-year mandatory service as an active duty soldier.
He recently returned to Super Junior with the group's sixth full-length album "Sexy, Free & Single" released earlier this month.
