Nancy Pelosi, the first and only female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has announced that she will not run in next November’s House election, marking her retirement from politics after more than 40 years.

According to AP and other sources on the 6th (local time), Representative Pelosi announced in a video address to voters in her district of San Francisco, California, that she "will not seek re-election."

Pelosi is expected to conclude her political career in January 2027, when her current term ends.

At age 85, Pelosi is regarded as one of the most influential female politicians in American history. She entered politics in 1987 at the age of 47 and led the Democratic Party as House Minority Leader for 20 years starting in 2003. She served two terms as Speaker of the House, from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023.

She played a key role in passing legislation such as the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and the resolution on Japanese military sexual slavery. She was also credited with playing a pivotal role in the Democratic Party’s victory in the recent election on the 4th.

Tearing Up Trump’s Speech... Trump: "Her retirement is a great contribution to the country"

Pelosi is well known for her adversarial relationship with President Donald Trump. As Speaker during Trump’s first administration, she frequently clashed with him. During her tenure as Speaker, she led the House to pass articles of impeachment against President Trump twice-in 2019 and 2021-on charges including incitement of insurrection, sending them to the Senate. She is also widely known for the so-called "sarcastic clap" incident during Trump’s 2019 address and for tearing up his State of the Union speech behind him in 2020.

President Trump referred to Pelosi as "Crazy Nancy," while Pelosi, in a recent CNN interview, called Trump "the worst thing on the face of the Earth," publicly exchanging harsh criticisms.

On this day, when asked by reporters in the White House Oval Office about Pelosi’s retirement announcement, President Trump responded by calling her a "vicious woman" and said, "I think her retirement is a great contribution to the country."
