Genesis, Hyundai Motor Company's luxury brand, will be the first to introduce technology that uses radar to prevent "door dings" (collisions when opening car doors) starting next year. The system measures the distance between the car and surrounding objects, and if it gets too close, the door will not open any further, thereby preventing scratches or injuries.
Hyundai's 'Door Collision Avoidance Sensor'... To be installed in Genesis vehicles starting next year
According to the automotive industry on November 6, Hyundai Motor Company plans to equip Genesis models with the "Door Collision Avoidance Sensor." This technology detects nearby walls, other vehicles, or passing pedestrians, and controls the door so that it does not open beyond a certain angle if an obstacle is detected.
The Genesis model equipped with the door ding prevention feature is scheduled for release next year. The technology is expected to debut as early as the "GV60 Magma," Genesis's first high-performance vehicle, which is set to be unveiled for the first time in Marseille, France, on November 20 (local time).

The 2016 Citro?n C4 Cactus attracted attention by adding polyurethane air bumps to the side of the vehicle to prevent door dings. Similar sponge-type door guards are widely sold on the market. In addition, Hyundai Mobis showcased its "Human-Centric Interior Lighting" technology at CES 2025, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition. This technology changes the interior lighting based on the user's mood and situation, and even changes the color of the lights when there is a risk of a door ding. However, these features are limited to preventing scratches or providing warnings-they cannot directly control the car door to prevent collisions.
Hyundai owns multiple radar technologies... Developed by first-tier supplier PHC Group

The door ding prevention technology was developed by PHC Group, a first-tier supplier to Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, based in Daegu. PHA, a subsidiary of PHC Group, has grown into a specialized automotive door moving system company since its establishment in 1985. After being selected as a business restructuring company in the future vehicle parts sector by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (formerly the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) in July 2023, the company began research and development (R&D) of radar sensors and door control systems.
A company representative stated, "Just as a power trunk stops opening when it detects a wall or a pedestrian, we introduced this technology to enhance safety, as accidents can also occur when opening car doors."
