The Donald Trump administration imposed sanctions on a Chinese chemical company on the 3rd (local time), immediately following China's Victory Day military parade.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that it had designated Guangzhou Tengwei, a Chinese chemical company, and two of its executives for sanctions on charges of manufacturing and selling synthetic opioids to Americans. Synthetic opioids are used as a precursor for fentanyl, commonly referred to as "zombie drugs." The United States has argued that China is responsible for supplying the precursors for fentanyl that enters the U.S. from Mexico or Canada, which has exacerbated the domestic drug crisis. This has also served as a basis for imposing tariffs on China.
John Hurley, Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes at the Treasury Department, stated, "Illegal opioids from China are destroying the lives, families, and communities of Americans," and added, "Under President Trump's leadership, we will use all available tools, including sanctions and law enforcement prosecutions, to stop the spread of these drugs."
This round of sanctions comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted a grand Victory Day event on the 3rd (September 2nd, Eastern Time), celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. He invited Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un, and others, demonstrating anti-American and anti-Western solidarity.
Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, said in a statement, "Today's action by the Treasury Department reflects the Trump administration's commitment to making America safe again by mobilizing all necessary law enforcement and diplomatic tools to end the deadly scourge of synthetic drugs and hold companies like Guangzhou Tengwei and their executives accountable."
