According to the retail industry on October 5, CU recently sold a Glen Grant 65-Year-Old high-end whiskey priced at 75 million KRW, which was released for this year's Chuseok holiday. This is the most expensive product ever sold at a convenience store to date.

This product is the first release in the "Splendor Collection" by the Glen Grant Distillery in Scotland, featuring rare original whiskey. It was distilled in 1958 and matured for over 65 years in French oak barrels. Only 151 bottles have reportedly been released worldwide.

The customer who purchased the product is a man in his 30s, who bought it through CU's proprietary commerce app, Pocket CU. The whiskey will be delivered directly to the location specified by the customer.

With the sale of the Glen Grant 65-Year-Old, CU has broken its own record for the highest-priced product. The previous record was held by a mobile home priced at 16 million KRW, sold during the Lunar New Year holiday in 2021. The whiskey sold this time is approximately 4.7 times more expensive than that.

A BGF Retail representative stated, "When we launched this ultra-premium whiskey, we did not expect it to actually be sold," adding, "As value-driven and taste-oriented consumption continues to spread, we plan to further diversify the range of products available at convenience stores."

In recent years, the convenience store industry has been engaging in unique marketing campaigns centered around ultra-high-priced products, especially around holiday seasons. During last year's Chuseok, the three major convenience store chains-CU, GS25, and 7-Eleven-offered the "Windsor Diamond Jubilee," a Scotch whiskey priced at 500 million KRW per bottle. CU has also released other ultra-premium products for holidays, such as Honma 5-Star golf clubs priced at 60.3 million KRW, caviar costing 130,000 KRW per spoon, and pre-orders for a Carnival High Limousine valued at 120 million KRW.

Industry insiders predict that such ultra-high-priced products will continue to appear, as they generate significant publicity through media and social networking services regardless of actual sales figures.
