Sustained Second- and Third-Degree Burns
Requiring Approximately Six Weeks of Hospital Treatment
A man in his 60s has been sentenced to prison for pouring hot cooking oil on a neighbor who visited him over a noise complaint and threatening them with a weapon.
On October 4, Kim Jiyeong, the presiding judge of the Criminal Division 6 at the Daejeon District Court, announced that A, a man in his 60s who was indicted on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated intimidation, was sentenced to three years in prison.
A was brought to trial on charges of verbally abusing his neighbor B, who had come to his home in July after hearing noise, and then pouring boiling cooking oil on B, causing second- and third-degree burns that required approximately six weeks of hospital treatment.
He was also charged with threatening another neighbor, C, who was in the hallway, with a weapon.
Investigations revealed that A had long harbored resentment over noise coming from the downstairs apartment.
It was found that A, angered by the loud noise, created additional noise by forcefully opening and closing the inner door of his own home, which prompted the victim to visit his apartment.
Judge Kim stated, "Given the nature and severity of the crime, the offense is extremely serious, and the victim suffered significant injuries. The defendant has not been forgiven by the victims, and he was previously sentenced to prison for a similar offense in 2015. These factors were taken into consideration in determining the sentence."
