Namwon City in North Jeolla Province will begin distributing public benefit allowances for farmers starting September 17, ahead of the Chuseok holiday.

According to the city, this initiative aims to stabilize farmers' operations and revitalize the local economy. This year, the total amount of public benefit allowances for farmers is 7.2 billion won, an increase of 300 million won compared to last year, and the number of recipients has risen by 4,097 to a total of 15,627.

Notably, starting this year, the eligibility criteria have been expanded from household units to individual farmers, and the residency and business registration requirements have been relaxed from two years to one year. As a result, participation has increased among groups previously excluded from the system, such as young and female farmers.

To facilitate the payment of the public benefit allowance, the city accepted applications at administrative welfare centers in each town, township, and neighborhood from March to May. After verifying eligibility, a final list of 15,627 recipients was confirmed. Single-operator businesses will receive 600,000 won, while businesses with two or more operators will receive 300,000 won per person. The allowance will be provided in the form of anonymous prepaid cards that can be used throughout Namwon City.

Farmers selected as recipients of the public benefit allowance can visit the administrative welfare center where they applied, starting today, to collect their cards. The cards are valid for one year, providing ample time for use as needed. However, card usage is restricted in entertainment, gambling, e-commerce, and transportation sectors to ensure that the support is focused on practical living needs and stimulating the local economy.

Mayor Choi Kyungsik stated, "We hope that the early distribution of this public benefit allowance will help stabilize farmers' incomes ahead of the Chuseok holiday and boost consumption among small businesses and neighborhood markets." He added, "We will continue to work on improving policies to reduce the economic burden on farmers."
