Tensions Exposed During Special Prosecutor Bills Process
"Resolving Internal Divisions"

High-ranking officials from the Democratic Party, the government, and the presidential office gathered for a dinner meeting at the Prime Minister's residence in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 14th, a holiday, to exchange views on current issues. The meeting appears to have been arranged to alleviate concerns among supporters, especially after recent tensions between Party leader Chung Cheongrae and floor leader Kim Byungki surfaced during the handling of the 'Three Special Prosecutor Bills' agreement.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., the dinner meeting was attended by Kang Hoonshik, Chief of Staff, and Woo Sangho, Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs, from the presidential office; Prime Minister Kim Minseok from the government; and Party leader Chung and floor leader Kim from the ruling party.

During the meeting, Party leader Chung and floor leader Kim smiled brightly and shook hands with Prime Minister Kim standing between them. All five attendees also posed for a commemorative photo together. It is reported that Prime Minister Kim proposed this meeting. An official from the presidential office explained, "This gathering is intended to facilitate smooth communication among the party, government, and presidential office," adding, "They will share their opinions on current issues."

A ruling party official stated, "It is true that cracks were detected within the party leadership over the special prosecutor bills," and added, "This meeting will serve as an opportunity to resolve the situation quickly and reaffirm our commitment to supporting the Lee Jaemyung administration."

Some observers suggest that the meeting aims not only to address the handling of the special prosecutor bills, but also to dispel concerns about recent discord between the party and government that has emerged during a series of reform efforts. In fact, there were reports that during a high-level party-government consultation on the 7th, an argument broke out between Party leader Chung and Senior Presidential Secretary Woo while discussing follow-up measures for prosecution reform.

A government official commented, "Everyone agrees that if internal friction persists early in the administration, we could miss critical timing for reforms," adding, "As a clash between the two main figures in the ruling bloc must not escalate, a turning point is needed."
