Controversy Over Remarks by MSNBC Chief Political Analyst
Issues Apology After Backlash

A political commentator who made remarks implying that Charlie Kirk, a young American conservative activist who died from a shooting, "brought it upon himself," has ultimately been dismissed from the broadcaster.

On September 10 (local time), international media outlets including The Wall Street Journal reported that Matthew Dowd, MSNBC's chief political analyst, is no longer with the network.

That day, Dowd appeared on MSNBC's "Katy Tur Reports" and commented on Kirk, saying, "You can't expect that terrible things won't happen when you don't stop thinking terrible thoughts and saying terrible things." This remark was interpreted as meaning that Kirk's words and actions put him in danger, sparking strong criticism from viewers.

Subsequently, Rebecca Kutler, president of MSNBC, issued an official statement, saying, "During the news broadcast about the Charlie Kirk shooting, Matthew Dowd made inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable remarks," and apologized, stating, "There is no place for violence in America."

Dowd also conveyed his apology through his social networking service 'Bluesky' account. He said, "I apologize for my tone and choice of words," and explained, "I did not intend to place responsibility for the horrific attack on Kirk."

Previously, Kirk, known as a staunch supporter and close associate of U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot and killed during a debate held at Utah Valley University in Utah on the same day. He founded and served as the head of the youth right-wing organization Turning Point USA and is known to have played a significant role in President Trump's attempt to regain office. Kirk was also frequently embroiled in controversy for making aggressive remarks about sexual minorities, Black people, and immigrants.
