Mother of the Late Kim Yeonjeong: "Regret That She Could Not Graduate... Her Name Will Remain at the University Forever"
Sunmoon University announced on September 8 that it had received a development fund donation of 10 million won from the parents of the late Kim Yeonjeong, a student from the Department of International Relations, on August 29.
This donation is especially meaningful as it is not just a simple act of support, but a special gesture to honor their daughter's academic journey and life.
The late Kim Yeonjeong tragically passed away in 2019 due to an unexpected accident while working part-time in Japan. Her parents donated the development fund in memory of their daughter, who was unable to receive her diploma, expressing their hope that "her name will remain at the university forever and be remembered together."
Kim Yeonjeong had diligently pursued her studies up to the second semester of her third year in the Department of International Relations before her life was cut short by a sudden traffic accident.
Her parents said, "It is deeply regrettable that she could not graduate," and decided to make the donation so that her name would be permanently enshrined in the 'Sunmoon University Development Fund Hall of Honor.'
At the donation ceremony, her mother, Asano Tomiko (age 63), stated, "Yeonjeong will be happy to see this from heaven," and added, "I hope my daughter's name will remain with Sunmoon University."
Asano has been recognized in the local community for her dedication in caring for both her mother-in-law and husband at the same time, and she received the Presidential Award for Filial Daughters-in-law in 2012.
President Moon Seongje expressed, "We are deeply grateful for this noble intention. The university will remember the devotion of the student and her family for a long time."
To honor Kim Yeonjeong's memory, Sunmoon University has decided to confer an honorary diploma at the 2025 academic year commencement ceremony, which will be held in February 2026.
This donation goes beyond mere financial support, delivering a heartfelt message by continuing the late student's dreams and academic aspirations, deeply moving both Sunmoon University and the local community.
