Over 10,000 Small Businesses Grow into Medium-Sized Enterprises in Five Years
Rapid Scaling Up Driven by Coupang’s Platform
Regional Companies Lead Nationwide Sales Expansion
Coupang announced on September 7 that, over the past five years, more than 10,000 businesses that joined its platform have grown from small businesses to medium-sized enterprises, surpassing annual sales of 3 billion won.
This figure represents the cumulative total of small businesses that joined services such as Rocket Delivery, Rocket Fresh, Rocket Growth, and Marketplace since 2020 and have since grown into medium-sized enterprises. The number of small businesses that became medium-sized enterprises increased from about 1,360 in 2020 to around 1,900 in 2022, and since 2023, more than 2,000 businesses have achieved this status each year.
Coupang cited Korea Credit Data's "Small Business Data Lab," noting that while the combined average annual sales of domestic small businesses last year was 179.58 million won per quarter, a 6% decrease from the previous year, approximately 2,000 small businesses on Coupang's platform grew by more than 30% annually during the same period.
Notably, more than 7 out of 10 businesses with annual sales exceeding 3 billion won were located outside of Seoul. Regional businesses used Coupang to sell a wide variety of products nationwide, including local specialties in categories such as food, beauty, and home appliances.
A Coupang representative stated, "Even during this challenging period when small businesses are experiencing declining sales due to the economic downturn, Coupang is supporting stable growth and revitalizing local economies. We will continue to expand collaboration with relevant organizations and local governments to provide new opportunities for small businesses."
