Easily Understanding the History and Process of Compiling the Korean Dictionary
The Yangsan City Independence Memorial Hall in Gyeongnam (Director Shin Yongcheol), in collaboration with the Independence Hall of Korea, will host the "Malmoi: Protecting Hangul" traveling exhibition from September 16 to November 2.
This exhibition is part of the 2025 Memorial Facility Cooperation Network Project. The Yangsan City Independence Memorial Hall will receive an interactive exhibition box, which will be displayed in the lobby on the second floor of the memorial hall.
"Malmoi," meaning "to gather words," refers to the first Korean dictionary that linguists attempted to compile during the Japanese colonial period.
This exhibition consists of a total of three types of exhibition boxes: an explanation box, an experience box, and an artifact box. It is designed to allow visitors to easily and engagingly experience the history and significance of compiling the Korean dictionary.
The explanation box introduces the journey of compiling the Korean dictionary during the Japanese colonial period through a timeline and commentary. The experience box allows visitors to directly observe the compilation process through educational tools and audiovisual materials. In particular, the artifact box will feature a replica of the "Joseonmal Great Dictionary Manuscript," which was designated as a National Cultural Heritage of Korea in 2020, providing visitors with a realistic sense of the original artifact.
Director Shin Yongcheol stated, "The fruit of our efforts to preserve the spirit of our nation during the history of the independence movement under Japanese rule was 'Malmoi.' I hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to once again appreciate the value of Hangul."
