Jongpil Park, a proportional representative of the People Power Party in the Daegu City Council, announced on September 5 that the "Ordinance on the Preservation and Promotion of Daegu Arirang," which he sponsored at the 319th extraordinary session, has passed the review by the Culture and Welfare Committee and is now awaiting a vote at the plenary session.
"Daegu Arirang" is a local folk song that reflects the daily life and emotions of the Daegu region. Its lyrics are characterized by depictions of landmarks such as Palgongsan Mountain and the Geumho River, as well as the use of regional dialect, highlighting the unique characteristics of Daegu.
Park explained the background of the ordinance, stating, "I proposed this ordinance to preserve Daegu Arirang, a unique local folk song of the Daegu region, and to widely promote its value as a cultural heritage."
The ordinance specifies the mayor's duty to establish policies for the preservation of Daegu Arirang, provides a basis for promoting projects such as education and performances or exhibitions related to Daegu Arirang, and includes the establishment of a cooperative system for the preservation and promotion of Daegu Arirang.
Jongpil Park stated, "Daegu Arirang is a precious cultural heritage that embodies the history and sentiments of our region," and added, "Through the enactment of this ordinance, I hope to share the value of Daegu Arirang with citizens and systematically preserve and develop it so that it can be passed down to future generations."
